Wandile Mjekevu left for Perpignan last year and hasn’t looked back since. With outstanding performances for his club, he has become a media darling in France.
How is the preparation going for the season?
It’s going very well. After the disappointment of being relegated, a lot of changes took place in the off season. We have a lot of new faces and new coaching staff. Our camps during pre season were focused on getting to know each other better and forming a bond as a team. We feel we’re well prepared for achieving our goal of returning to the top 14.
What can you tell us about where you stay?
Perpignan is a little city about 30KM from the border of Spain. With a beach and 300 days of sunshine a year, there’s not much more you can ask for. The region is very passionate about their rugby and their Catalan identity. It’s an amazing place to stay and play rugby. I feel very privileged to have this opportunity.
What is the best thing for you about being in France?
There’s plenty to like about France. Things like the food, the weather (in the south) come to mind immediately. For me it’s the chance to experience something new and to travel to new places.
What do you do on a day off?
Not too much, especially when the season is in full swing. I’ll hang out with my friends, go out for a meal and basically just relax.
