We all know the life of a rugby player whether they are playing locally or overseas, but you do not often hear about how the wives and girl friends cope. To have to up root yourself, your kids and your pets to a foreign land with new cultures and languages can be very daunting. We will be interviewing wives and girl friends of our overseas based players to find out the ups and downs of choosing the life of a WAG.
First up is Nicke Duvenage, wife of ex Stormers scrum half, Dewaldt Duvenage. Their child, Diezel a feisty Chihuahua, came with them. Living in the South of Frace in Perpignan on the border of Spain, Nicke tells us a little about her new life.
How does it feel to be in a foreign land?
It’s a very nice experience for the two of us. We have had some great adventures so far. We travel on his off days and as a wife it is the same as being back home. The only difference is that he needs more support because we don’t have family or old friends here.
What has been the best adventure so far?
I would say our trip to Euro Disney in Paris. We spent two days there and then another two days exploring Paris. We visited the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and the Bridge of love, where we got to put a lock on the bridge. It was really romantic and fun.
What do you enjoy about living in France?
I get to learn French which is a beautiful language and I get to eat all the different types of food.
And your favourite foods there?
Different types of cold meats, cheeses and the home made breads.
You must be spoiled for choice with restaurants?
Our favourite is Le Curre. It’s a beach house restaurant which serves steaks and amazing brochettes which reminds us of home.
How do you fill your time when Dewies is away with the team?
Now that it is Summer, I spend a lot of time at the beach which is only 100m from our house. Other than that I still work for my business back in SA which is SoccerMom. I also have lots of house chores to do as we do all our own house work here.
Have you been shopping up a storm in all those French Boutiques?
I enjoy shopping in Barcelona the most and it is only two hours away but otherwise I shop online. There is nothing like Canal Walk here.
You recently had family come and visit you guys, how was that?
Yes they were here for a whole month. We showed them round Perpignan for a few days and then visited all the small towns around us. The last week we took them to Barcelona where we shopped till we dropped and also got to see One Direction in concert which was amazing.
Thanks Nicke for giving us a glimpse into your new life and we wish you all the best on your great adventure.
Pleasure guys, chat soon.
