Siyabonga Ntubeni aka Scarra aka George Clooney.
Scarra, as he is affectionately known by his teammates, got his nickname by default. The children at his school mispronounced his official clan name, Gxarha, and so “Scarra” was born. Soon afterwards, the team started referring to him as George Clooney. He was of course delighted with the comparison until he saw Oceans Eleven with fellow housemate, Siya Kolisi, and noticed why they call George the silver fox. So the silver streak in his hair along with his reworked clan name created an albeit round about legacy that is Scarra Ntubeni today.
Born in King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape, he attended Dale College where he excelled at rugby and was quickly snatched up by KES who gave him a full bursary where he finished out his last two years of high school. He was a natural all round sportsman who was adept at water polo and cricket but ultimately chose rugby as that is where his passion lay. In fact, it was only in Grade 12 that he actually played at hooker, as he had always been a loose forward up until then. A reflection on his ability to adapt to new situations showed, by changing schools and positions in the very same year.
In 2010 he joined the Western Province Institute with fellow super stars, Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Frans Malherbe, Nizaam Carr, Ulrich Beyers and Sam Lane. That year the Western Province U19 side crushed the Blue Bulls side in the Currie Cup final at Kings Park where Scarra scored a try.
He made his debut the following year for the Stormers for the Super Rugby competition, which gave this humble hooker more confidence and belief in his god given abilities.
After making the Super 15 squad in 2012, he stepped it up to be a prominent part of the 2012 WP Currie Cup winning side. He was named Man of the match on two occasions as well as Western Province most promising player of the year. Hard work and dedication set him up for a stellar year of outstanding rugby in 2013.
Just as he doesn’t shy away from contact on the field, he performs his duties off the field with as just as much integrity
Mr. Price Sport saw his potential back in 2010 while at the WP Institute and have been his official kit sponsor ever since, particularly with their Maxed range. He has adorned billboards across the country and is the perfect role model for any young child wishing to grow up into a professional athlete with impeccable manners and modesty to boot. A sponsor’s favourite, Scarra always has time for his fans and is extremely good with youngsters. Just as he doesn’t shy away from contact on the field, he performs his duties off the field with as just as much integrity. So much so that Peugeot Tygervalley jumped at the chance to make him their brand ambassador in August 2013. He can be seen nipping around Cape Town in his trendy 208 in true George Clooney style.
2013 has been an explosive year for Scarra, despite being injured in the beginning of the year. He has hit the ground running and built up some serious steam for the Currie Cup. The silverback has arrived and is here to stay.
