Rynier Bernardo a rising King

February 3, 2014

This former Framesby High old boy is making waves in the Eastern Province and is fast becoming one to look out for at the Southern Kings franchise.

Claire de la Harpe visited the talented lock for a bit of a chat…

Which school did you attend and when did you start playing rugby?

I started my Primary years at Sundrige Primary and then went to Framesby High school.

I started playing rugby at the age of 8.

Who has been your biggest inspiration so far and why?

My dad taught me everything about rugby until I started playing professionally and he is until

today, my biggest supporter.

What has been the highlight of your rugby career?

The highlight of my rugby must be when I was chosen for the u/18 SA schools team and playing

Super Rugby.

What is your favourite rugby memory / funniest rugby experience?

Being a lock and I needed to kick-goals for my high school team.

Your hobbies / how do you relax?

Playing a round of golf and relaxing in front of the tv playing a bit of Xbox

What advice would you give to young players wanting to develop into professional rugby players?

Rugby takes a lot of hard work. Focus on the basics as per your position, then you will have a good

foundation to build on.

What are you studying at the moment and how are your studies progressing?

I am studying LLB law, rugby takes up a fair amount of time but trying to find a balance between

the two is best so that I can be assured of a profession after rugby.

Where would you like to be in your life in three years’ time?

I will be 26 so hopefully i will be done studying and engaged.
