Ruan Potgieter

November 25, 2014

Ruan Potgieter has all the skill and flair needed to become an outstanding flyhalf for SA. Union Sports Mag caught up with the speedy General.

How has 2014 gone for you?

2014 has been a good season in terms of what I have achieved. Playing U21 in my under U19 year was really a great blessing and I am so grateful for it. But in terms of my performance during the season I personally think I could have done better as a player. But Ive learned a lot from that and now I’m concentrating 100% on improving myself.

Who gets you revved up in the changing room at half time?

The person who gets me going at half time has been coach MJ this year as he is a fly half and what he says to me at half time really sticks with me for the remainder of the game.

What was your best memory from school?

My best memory of school was making my 1st XV debut when I was in grade 10 and scoring a try in that same game.

What was your worst memory from school?

My worst memory is from exactly the same game because just after I scored the try I tried to throw a miss pass to our outside centre but their fullback intercepted and went all the way for about a 70 metre try.

If you were invisible for a day, what would you get up to?

I would steal a Ford Mustang and give it to my dad becaise I cant afford to buy him one yet.

Favourite player?

Daniel Carter.

Do you have any special routines you must do before a game?

Routine before a game. I wash my boots and I wear the same underwear for every single game and I always pack my left boot in my bag first and when I put my boots on I always put the right one on first.

What makes a great fly half?

Good vision, communication and the ability to see spaces that no one sees. And I think what makes the best fly half is if he is unpredictable.

What are your goals for 2015?

To start at flyhalf for the Vodacom Cup side and to make the Baby Boks team. And if the Lord blesses me to make my Currie Cup debut for the senior team.

What do you like most about the Cheetahs?

What I love most about the Cheetahs is that we are all a big family and everyone is unbelievably humble.
