Eastern Province Kings Eighthman, Paul Schoeman, is relishing his role at the Franchise that is going from strength to strength.
Where did you grow up and when did you start playing rugby?
On our farm close to Craddock . Started at age 4 or 5 but my first rugby match was in grade 1.
You have come through the Kings Academy in Port Elizabeth and you are now playing at senior level – how did being in a rugby academy improve your game and your view of professional rugby?
Under the guidance of Robbie Kempson I learned a lot in the academy especially to be more professional. I also learned a lot more rugby specific things, which helped me to become a better rugby player.
Biggest rugby inspiration and why?
My Uncle has been my biggest supporter and inspiration. He has always motivated and encouraged me, on and off the field and I owe so much to him as he has been instrumental in my upbringing. My uncle farms outside Craddock and I try to spend as much time as I can with him.
How do you prepare yourself mentally for matches?
I’m not too serious before a game I try to stay relaxed . I play the game I want to play in my head . If I am always positive, I believe that I will do well .
Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time – in terms of your rugby career and your personal life?
Hopefully by that time a Springbok, and a well-capped Super Rugby player. I just want to be happy in that space and time in my personal life
Hobbies, other than rugby?
Well top of the list is hunting and being on the farm . I also like to be around family and friends as they play a big role in my life . I like playing other sports as well such as squash , cricket and table tennis. I’m also an online gamer .
