We caught up with Frans Viljoen from Lyon after the opening round of the Top 14. Lyon was promoted in the Top 14 at the end of the 2013/2014 season after winning the Pro D2.
What is the immediate difference between the Top 14 and the Pro D2?
With the Top 14 you play every weekend against the best players in the world and it’s a nice challenge to be able to measure yourself against the best. Pro D2 is a bit slower but still very tough.
Any new and interesting players that have joined your squad?
George Smith is here with us now so it has been nice learning from him. I can see why he is still one of the best players in the world.
Has the team approach changed much now that you are in the Top 14?
Yes it has! If you aren’t at your best every weekend you can easily lose with 30 points. But luckily our coaching team is very good and they are keeping us on our toes.
All the best Frans and we look forward to watching you in action.
Cheers and good luck to all the Currie Cup teams back home.
