Ex Stormers scrum half, Dewaldt Duvenage, is living large in France at his new club Perpignan.
What is the best thing about France?
The best thing of France is the fact of being able to learn a new culture
Can you speak French yet, what can you say?
Je parle un peu de français – I can speak a little bit but understand more than I can speak! But am enjoying the conversations and all the facial expressions and sign languages.
What do you miss about South Africa?
I miss friends and family and certainly the food
How is the style of rugby in France compared to the Stormers style?
Rugby style in France is more unstructured, and free flowing. Not lots of time is spent on defense.
Can you give us a quick run through of a normal training day for you?
Normal working day in Perpignan changes through the year. In winter we start a bit earlier and in summer later. Start from 8:30 until 12 and then we have siesta (ha ha) then again from 2:30 until 5 o’clock.
Have you travelled anywhere since you arrived? If not where is the first place you want to go?
Barcelona is only a few minutes away. My wife is loving that! Will definitely travel across Europe as it very easy to get around.
Have you eaten frog’s legs?
No frog legs yet! But ate a few funny things I can’t pronounce. But I am trying to learn the French culture.
What is different between the Heineken Cup and Super Rugby?
Heineken Cup is a bit slower than Super rugby, because the referees let the players handle the rucks, so anything goes a bit more! Weather plays a big role in the Northern hemisphere
What do you do in your off time?
In summer in Perpignan there’s a lot to do! As it is a holiday destination! Sun, Beach, Stand paddleboard, Jet ski, golf!
You have been married now just over a month, how is married life?
Married life is awesome, Nicke and myself are enjoying the new adventures, life in Perpignan is great, less stress and we are very, very happy.
