Christiaan Erasmus

November 13, 2014

Christiaan Erasmus is as ambitious as it gets and is set to have a blinding 2015. The feisty scrumhalf chats to Union Sports Mag.

How do you feel 2014 has gone for you?

I feel this year went well for me as I managed to play all the games in the U19 Currie Cup for the Cheetahs side keeping out those few contracted players in those positions. I also managed to get myself into the Varsity Cup group for my University Cup season of 2015. This is a great achievement for me considering my young age.

Who gets you revved up in the changing room at half time?

This season at the Free State our head coach, Andre Tredoux did most of the revving up.

What was your best memory at Nelspruit High?

My best memory was when we the first team beat Monnas as well as Garsfontein last year which were two big wins for us considering the players they bought.

What was your worst memory at school?

It has to be when we slipped up last year in the Beeld Trophy in the semi final against EG Jansen. We were very disappointed because we knew we could have beaten them.

If you were invisible for a day what would you get up to?

Difficult question…I think I would go to all the referees that blew a bad game against us and throw them with eggs ha ha

Your favourite rugby player?

Has to be between Francois Hougaard and Quade Cooper.

Do you have any routines before a game or any special socks you have to wear?

My game day routine usually starts off with a big breakfast, followed by a productive nap. Then I get my mind off things by playing Fifa with mates. As the game gets closer I listen to music to get me in the zone and play the game over and over in my mind.

What makes a great scrumhalf?

Primarily a scrumhalf must be able to pass and kick well on both sides. I also think that vision and speed plays a big role for any scrumhalf. He controls the game and is the link between forwards and backs.  Therefore communication is also very importnat. Other than that you need to be fit and hard working.

What are your goals for 2015?

It is a big year for me and I set high goals to reach. My first goal is to play Varsity Cup next year and be a strong contender amongst other scrumhalves in the competition. Following that, I would like to play for the Free State U21 side. Then ultimately get selected in the Junior Bok side.

What do you like most about the Cheetahs?

I like the fact that the Cheetahs can compete against sides like the Bulls and Province that has a way bigger budget to contract big names and we still beat them with fewer contracted players that were developed here in the Free State.

All the best for 2015!
